I am moving things out of my parent's house as they are packing up to move.
I came across some flash cards I must have made in high school and sadly, I do not know half of the words.
I am disgusted at my writing skills and my vernacular.
I need to read more, write more and have more intellectual and cerebral conversations.
This journal I am creating for myself is basically a sketch pad for my writing/vocabulary skills.
I don' expect anyone to ever read it. I may never even read it.
It will probably be boring. But my hope is that I will write in it enough so that I will be capable of carrying on a conversation and writing a letter that is not only not boring, but interesting and humorous, with some wit.
Anyway,
Here goes:
Efflorescence
I thought this word meant to glow... I have been to the Bioluminescence Bay in Puerto Rico and have seen it in a few other places as well, I confused the words.
Anyway efflorecence means the action or process of developing and unfolding as if coming into a flower. When you google it, the images show efflorescence of moss growing on walls.
I am not impressed.
Moving on...
Enmity
Emity is positive, active and typically mutual hatred or ill will.
I can make many inappropriate jokes with this word and what a few friends and I have enmity towards. Since this is a public blog, I will keep those jokes to myself, but just know, I am chuckling.
Decorous
Marked by propriety (proper, suitable, appropriate) and good taste, correct.
This is more to do with society,I think.
So, for example, when I go to job interviews, I am decorous, or atleast try to be, and I hope they see me that way. I guess if I am hired, then I know I have been seen as decorous.
Demure
This word means to be reserved, modest or serious (coy)
Usually I think people who have too much demure are rather boring- or at-least not my cup of tea, that is because not only are they modest and reserved, but also serious.
Seriousness means lacking humor.
Life would not be as sweet without it.
Chorister
This is simply a word for a singer in the choir or a leader of a church choir.
I probably do not know this word because I have never been and never will be a chorister. My voice is not even good enough to be in a choir.
Bastion
This is something that is considered a stronghold (Bulwark?)
It is a fortified area or position
Projecting part of a fortification
A bastion is something that gives protection in case of an attack.
My bastion is distance. I push away when things get uneasy. That way I am protected from being hurt.
Hiatus
A gap or passage, interruption in time
I feel like I am currently living in a hiatus between college life and professional life, still... after 4 years.
Ludicrous
amusing or laughable because it is so absurd
For a lie to be ludicrous, it must be extremely obvious that it is a lie.
Ineffectual
I obviously know what ineffectual means, but the fact of the matter is, knowing what it means and not using such words in my vernacular is in fact ineffectual. It does not produce the proper or intended effect, it is futile.
Jeer
To taunt or mock.
I am a jeer-er from time to time, it is not nice. I am guilty.
Indigo was a word. it is a blue dye, that about sums that one up.
Inarticulate, that's me!!!! And who I hope not to be. The definition is to be incapable of speech, esp under stress of emotion, or even to be mute. Obviously, I am exaggerating...But I am not well voiced or expressed. And I am defiantly incapable of giving coherent, clear and effective expression to my ideas and feelings.
Theorem
It is a formula or proposition, like in math. Something that is deduced or to be deduced from something else.. It is an idea accepted or proposed.
Apparently it is also a stencil or a painting made on velvet by using stencil.
I think we make theorems in everyday life. Do I have an example? No. Should I, yes?
Appall
Apparently it means to weaken or fail, but it also means to overcome with consternation(amazement that causes confusion), shock or dismay. I use the second meaning much more- in a negative manner.
